PCI at Africa Climate Summit 2023: OXYGEN ENERGY CLIMATE NEXUS

The recent Africa Climate Summit 2023, held in Nairobi, brought together experts, policymakers, and organizations to discuss the pressing issue of climate change.

Among the various topics covered, the workshop ”OXYGEN ENERGY CLIMATE NEXUS” drew attention by explicitly addressing the critical link between health and climate change. This workshop underscored the urgency of collaborative efforts to combat the adverse effects of climate change, highlighting Africa’s potential contribution in areas like renewable energy resources and investment opportunities. The Summit emphasized the importance of partnerships involving governments, the private sector, civil society, philanthropy, and local communities.

PCI’s Role in the IGPC Hosted Side Event

PCI had the distinct honor of being part of the IGPC hosted side event, where IGPC showcased their innovative AIRS Approach. This approach centers on providing clean and resilient energy to power onsite medical oxygen generation, harnessing the potential of the local workforce. In a comprehensive evaluation comparing five different manufacturers of onsite Oxygen Generation Plants, AIRS unequivocally endorsed the VSA (Vacuum Swing Adsorption) plant as the technology of choice for each hospital.

The AIRS Approach doesn’t stop at recommending VSA plants. It extends to advocate for powering systems using photovoltaic (PV) solar combined with battery energy storage systems (BESS), along with the installation of hospital internal pipelines. This strategic combination not only significantly reduces the carbon footprint by decreasing the need for diesel power generation and the transport of hazardous oxygen cylinders but also leads to substantial cost savings. These savings can then be redirected toward vital medical treatments that would otherwise be financially challenging to provide.

Furthermore, AIRS emphasizes the importance of training onsite public health workers in biomedical and solar technical aspects, safety procedures, and equipment maintenance. This focus on capacity-building ensures long-term, sustainable solutions with local ownership over both the technology and the processes.

PCI’s Ongoing Commitment

PCI has been actively involved in the IGPC (Institute of Global Perioperative Care) https://globalperioperative.care/and SCCM (Society of Critical Care Medicine) activities, particularly through the dedicated efforts of Dr. John Sampson from Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. Orders for PCI’s DOCS (Distributed Oxygen Concentration System) have already been placed for the first two sites in The Gambia and Liberia, with Liberia poised to harness solar power for its DOCS system.

The significance of PCI’s involvement in this consortium cannot be overstated. The DOCS system’s superior power efficiency over traditional PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) technology aligns perfectly with the AIRS recommendation, making it the most ecologically sound solution. This not only reduces harmful emissions but also frees up funds that can be channeled into critical medical procedures that would otherwise be unaffordable.

In a nutshell, the operation of DOCS saves lives while simultaneously contributing to the reduction of noxious emissions. Therefore, it is imperative that PCI continues to provide unwavering support to these endeavors. This commitment is driven by ethical considerations, the enhancement of company reputation, and the recognition of the immense business potential that lies in the intersection of clean energy, healthcare, and sustainability.

PCI’s dedication to pioneering sustainable solutions in the healthcare sector not only benefits communities in need but also sets a commendable example for organizations worldwide. In the quest to combat climate change and enhance healthcare access, PCI’s contributions are indeed indispensable.

VSA Technology

To produce oxygen from air, PCI uses a proprietary Vacuum Swing Adsorption (VSA) process that eliminates many of the design problems associated with traditional on-site gas separation systems (PSA). Our innovative VSA system eliminates the need for process valves, feed air compressors, associated dryers and feed air filtering systems. Our robust VSA oxygen process extracts maximum sieve and power efficiencies = low cost (both CapX and OpX) high purity oxygen generation. Oxygen produced is 93% purity. Additional product/systems features include load following, remote monitoring and diagnostics along with an industry only 10-year warranty on the adsorber bed vessel. Average life span of our systems is 10-15+ years.

About PCI Gases

Pacific Consolidated Industries (PCI Gases) is a company based in Riverside, California USA that manufactures on-site air separation equipment to produce oxygen. Since 1984, this equipment finds its use in markets such as Medical, Environmental/Biological, Industrial, Oil & Gas and Military, to name a few. Since the introduction of our Commercial Oxygen Division in 2007, we have built over 1000 systems successfully operating in over 50 countries. We also offer a timely and dedicated aftermarket division to support every customer in the field with their respective system. PCI is an ISO 9001-2008 and ISO 13485-2003 organization. PCI Gases is a leading global manufacturer of VSA Oxygen Generating Systems (Vacuum Swing Adsorption), offer the DOCS (Deployable Oxygen Concentrator System) as an attractive and safe on-site alternative to using liquid oxygen (LOX) or other oxygen technologies for your gasification process. Our systems range from 340 lbs. per day to 20 tons per day (oxygen flow rate). For more information, please visit www.pcigases.com
