Oxy-Fuel Cutting

Operating costs can be significantly reduced by generating oxygen onsite as opposed to buying and having oxygen delivered.

Oxy-Fuel Cutting

Oxygen plays a very important role in the scrap industry: it is used with oxyfuel cutting to break down metal pieces of scrap before recycling. The Deployable Oxygen Concentrator System (DOCS) can be directly connected to a cutting torch to be used instantly. If the mode of cylinder oxygen is preferred, then the DOCS unit is capable of filling up cylinders at the following rates with cylinder fill pressure of 2,000-2,650 psig (138-183 bar).

Another option for more deployable operations that our clients use is mounting the DOCS unit to a trailer bed. This allows for ease of bringing the unit to the larger pieces of scrap and other items that will be cut. Although the purity of oxygen produced from a DOCS unit is ~4% lower than purchased cylinder oxygen, the difference is not noticeable if the entire cutting procedure is taken into consideration. When using cylinder oxygen, multiple variables increase the overall time: moving oxygen cylinders, hooking up to torch, adjusting pressure throughout process, replacing cylinder, etc. With a DOCS unit, there is a constant supply of oxygen. This removes added time associated with cylinder oxygen.

We recently published research comparing purity of oxygen affecting speed and quality of oxy-fuel cutting in the American Welding Society (AWS) May Journal. This was completed at a customer’s scrapyard site using oxygen produced from a DOCS 200 as well as cylinder oxygen. The research revealed that there are many different variables that can impact the speed of cutting steel other than the purity of the oxygen. When using an experienced cutting operator and correct torch equipment, oxygen from a DOCS unit can perform on the same performance level as cylinder oxygen, and sometimes cut faster.
