A major milestone: Oxygen 93% is finally recognised as medically equivalent to Oxygen 99% / 99.5%
Concerns that the draft revision of the WHO International Pharmacopoeia would restrict access to medical oxygen are resolved. Past uncertainties caused by separate international definitions of medicinal oxygen dependant on concentration are thus eliminated. Healthcare Authorities, Hospitals and Healthcare Professionals working to the PH.INT definition can now treat patients with both oxygen 93% and oxygen 99.5% regardless of source.
We are sharing the on behalf of WHO International Pharmacopoeia, which defines and considers the following:
- The Medicinal Oxygen monograph now incorporates both currently internationally recognized concentrations of oxygen. Both Oxygen 93% and Oxygen 99.5% are hereby deemed medically equivalent in terms of patient treatment. The stipulated quality requirements are identical.
- In accordance with clinical guidelines, Medicinal Oxygen can be used either in undiluted form or as mixtures of Oxygen 93% and Oxygen 99.5%
A New Definition for WHO International Pharmacopoeia
This new definition comes as a result of in-depth consultation with globally recognized experts on the subject of patient treatment with Medicinal Oxygen. The WHO hereby drew on support from several key organizations including The Every Breath Counts Coalition https://stoppneumonia.org/, The World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiologists WFSAhttps://wfsahq.org/, ISO Technical Committee 121 (Anaesthetic and Respiratory Equipment)https://www.iso.org/committee/51984.html and the International Association of Manufacturers of Medical Gas Generators for Hospitals (MEDIGHAM) https://www.medigham.net/.
“The superior WHO definition of Medicinal Oxygen is a major milestone for PCI Gases as a recognized manufacturer of power-efficient onsite oxygen generators (DOCS). PCI Gases appreciates being afforded the opportunity to contribute to this WHO driven advance, thus removing one of the major barriers to patient access to life-saving medicinal oxygen worldwide. The specific listing of VSA technology for the first time in an international pharmacopeia further broadens the possibilities for Healthcare Authorities and Hospitals to select the oxygen source most suitable for specific local requirements and situations.”
Finally, the experts at the WHO are to be congratulated for taking a leading role in reducing barriers to Medicinal Oxygen, especially in Low and Middle Income Countries LMICs. Their fact-based amendment of PH.INT is both groundbreakingly vital and farsighted. As a direct result, innumerable patients will benefit from increased access to Medicinal Oxygen, alleviating suffering and saving lives throughout the world.

VSA Technology
To produce oxygen from air, PCI uses a proprietary Vacuum Swing Adsorption (VSA) process that eliminates many of the design problems associated with traditional on-site gas separation systems (PSA). Our innovative VSA system eliminates the need for process valves, feed air compressors, associated dryers and feed air filtering systems. Our robust VSA oxygen process extracts maximum sieve and power efficiencies = low cost (both CapX and OpX) high purity oxygen generation. Oxygen produced is 93% purity. Additional product/systems features include load following, remote monitoring and diagnostics along with an industry only 10-year warranty on the adsorber bed vessel. Average life span of our systems is 10-15+ years.

Strengthening Healthcare Infrastructure with Sustainable Oxygen Solutions to Improve Patient Care and Combat the Pandemic
[Port-au-Prince] – The United States government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), donated two PCI Gases’s oxygen generators with Vacuum Swing Adsorption (VSA) technology to Haiti. These oxygen generators will play a critical role in the national emergency response to COVID-19 by serving more than 750,000 people in hard-to-reach areas of northern Haiti. With emergency COVID-19 support, USAID has created a long-term sustainable solution for oxygen needs for Haiti.
U.S. Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Eric W. Stromayer remarked, “The U.S. government continues to support the ongoing fight against COVID-19 in Haiti. We reiterate our commitment with this donation from the American people to fortify the medical oxygen ecosystem in Haiti.”

In early June, the two oxygen generating plants were delivered to Hôpital Centre de Bienfaisance de Pignon (CBP), in the North department, and Hôpital Notre Dame de la Paix de Jean-Rabel (HNDP), in the Northwest department of Haiti. USAID worked in collaboration with the National Coordination Unit for the Coronavirus Response, in French Cellule Nationale de Coordination de la Réponse au Coronavirus, of the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP), to select these two hospitals to strategically meet the needs of Haitian people in hard-to-reach locations.

PCI’s On-site Oxygen Generators have proven to be the technology of choice, providing a highly reliable and economical source of oxygen.
The production of animal proteins will continue to play and important role in feeding the rapidly expanding global population. Recent analysis has however shown the significance of gases emitted during this process and their negative effect on causing global warming. It is a recognised fact that fish as a source of animal protein have the lowest emission of greenhouse gases. Modern land-based RAS Aquaculture Systems have negligible fresh water requirements due to reuse of process water, purified with the help of supplemental oxygen.
The benefits of Active Oxygen Management Programs are long recognised with a guaranteed secure supply of supplementary oxygen an absolute necessity. Our on-site oxygen generators are now the technology to choice providing a highly reliable and economic source of oxygen.
Our DOCS are today’s economic alternative independent source of high-grade oxygen without the supply chain problems and risks associated with centralized supply.
Benefits of Active Oxygen Management programs:
- Increased fish growth / welfare
- Reduced fish mortality
- Higher stocking density / production yields
- Feed cost savings through improved feed utilization FCR
- Increased production capacity through reduced cycle times
- Pumping cost savings through reduced water recirculation
- Higher sales price through higher average weight gain / fish quality
